The right cut for your hair texture

The trendiest hairstyle of the moment can often demand far too much of your time. This is one of the main reasons why your hair never looks as good as when you just left the hairdresser's chair. Maybe it's because you don't know how to style your hair, have the right hair products, or the hairstyle you've chosen doesn't suit your hair structure. Having a hairstyle that is not completely perfect is something many people recognise. In fact, you can unknowingly walk around with the wrong hairstyle for your entire life, just like 78 % women walk around with the wrong bra size.

Damaged hair and bald patches after blow drying

Did you know that long-term use of curly hair can lead to permanent hair loss? Many women regularly wear curly hair without giving their hair and scalp a rest. The benefits of curly hair are a long hair full of volume. Many use them because their genetic make-up cannot give them the hair they want.

Once you've decided to try it, it's easy to get stuck with it and use it regularly for several years. Intermittent use is fine if your hair is otherwise strong and healthy, as long as it is fixed by a hairdresser and you follow the care instructions. You should also not exceed the recommended time for your curly hair.

Having hair extensions is very costly and many people choose to exceed the recommended time for permanently inserted hair extensions, which in the worst case also leads to you creating extra stress on your own hair. Normally, we lose about 50-100 hairs a day, the curly hair contributes to your own hair being incorrectly loaded and this means that you lose more hair than normal.

Hair extensions can be a very appealing solution for people who want to dramatically change their hairstyle, but it comes at a price. The longer and more hair, the more stress you can create on your hair roots. Therefore, make sure you have the best basic conditions before you consider getting a hair extension.

Improperly inserted hair extensions can damage your hair forever

Long-term use of hair extensions can damage your hair to such an extent that it can no longer be repaired. This can easily become a vicious cycle, and you may even end up adding more hair extensions to cover the damage, when you should really stop using hair extensions, cut them short and start taking care of your hair.

Hair extensions have received much media attention as more and more celebrities are encountering problematic side effects associated with long-term use. Usually, hair extensions do not cause temporary wear and tear and the hair recovers quickly. However, sometimes a damaged hair may need to be helped with some PRP treatmentsSuch a treatment helps to boost weak hair follicles and possibly activates even those follicles that are dormant.

Hair extensions attached to your own hair are always a bit more stressful. A popular method called Nail Hair extensions involves loops of hair attached with glue around the wearer's own hair, this method can add extra weight to the hair and can lead to hair loss. We have also seen that long term use of the Weave method where loose hair is braided against the wearer's scalp has resulted in damaged hair. It is a weave that creates tension on the scalp, especially when newly inserted, and can lead to hair loss, read more on Traction Alopecia. Hair pulled out in this way can cause permanent damage to hair follicles and prevent further hair growth.

If you experience hair loss and damage caused by hair extensions, the first step is to remove the hair extensions as soon as possible. Many women like to cover up the damage with additional extensions, this is not a winning option to fix the problem as it usually gets worse and should be avoided to prevent permanent hair loss.

If the damage is less extensive, you may need to change your hairstyle, which can be quite a dramatic change to remove damaged hair. Eventually, your hair will recover without the need for a hair transplant or medication.

When a haircut is not enough

Sometimes, hair loss and damage caused by hair extensions cannot be corrected by simply discontinuing their hair extensions. For women who have bald patches of thinning hair, a visit to a hair clinic is recommended. We at Akacia Medical have seen many women experiencing hair loss and these are directly linked to the overuse of hair extensions, we have successful treatments for hair loss.

Did you know that sleeping on silk sheets can reduce hair loss?

The type of pillowcase we sleep on may not be something we think about, but the fact is that the choice of material affects our hair. It's a bit like saying you should never rub your hair when it's wet and extra fragile.

Why sleep on silk sheets?

First of all, it's a bit more luxurious because it costs a bit more, but the fact is that satin fabric is the most frictionless pillowcase in natural materials while satin is the shiniest.

  • Reduces frizzy hair that comes from sleeping too hot
  • Reduces wear and tear on the hair
  • Reduces broken hair ends
  • Keeps the skin moisturised
  • Reduces the appearance of wrinkles on the face
  • The material keeps you cool more easily all year round

It is said that 100% silk of the finest mulberry silk also known as reel silk is of better quality and is smoothest for skin and hair. It is known as "beauty sleep" and how we sleep affects our bodies.

We don't have any scientific studies to back up the above information, but this is something that many people in the beauty industry practice who have beautiful hair. A little fun curiosity in our hair blog!

Measure how thick your hair is!

Have you ever wondered how thick your hair is?

If you have longer hair and can wear a tassel, you can easily measure the circumference of your ponytail. A hair that has a low density will be less than 2.54 cm in circumference and thus considered to be on the thinner side. The average density of the circumference usually ranges between 2.54 cm-5.04 cm and an extremely high density is at least 10.16 cm.

Density refers to the density of hairs on the scalp.

Unfortunately, long-term use of tight hair ties can contribute to long-term hair thinning, as your hair follicles are constantly under pressure. Hairpieces with metal attachments can also break off the top layer of your hair. So be sure to vary your hairstyles!

Want to know if you are losing more hair than usual? It can reveal signs of hair loss but there are more things to consider.

Green tea and its health benefits for our hair growth

Green tea is healthy and also promotes our hair by increasing blood circulation in the scalp. Green tea is capable of breaking down plaque in our blood vessels, which promotes blood flow to almost all organs, including the scalp.

Green tea is loaded with antioxidants that destroy the free radicals that prevent proper blood circulation, thus helping to promote hair growth. EGCG stands for "Epigallocatechin gallate" and is one of tea's many catechins (antioxidant group). EGCG is the catechin found in green tea. EGCG is an antioxidant and there are studies that show that EGCG (and possibly other substances in green tea) helps to prevent the breakdown of adrenaline and noradrenaline in the body (two hormones), which in turn may increase liver fat metabolism and mitochondrial energy consumption. Mitochondria are responsible for converting nutrients into energy in cells. So feel free to drink 2 cups of green tea every day. Good to know is that you should not expect results immediately. Green tea is both delicious and has many health benefits that make it a beneficial drink.

Other good properties of green tea:
  • Green tea contains a large amount of polyphenols and antioxidants that protect and repair our cells during illness, ageing and general deterioration.
  • The anti-inflammatory properties of green tea stimulate hair growth.
  • Green tea helps to release stress and combat depression which is also one of the main causes of hair loss.
  • There are natural catechins in green tea.

How to brew a cup of green tea.

A good tea is brewed from good ingredients, so organic green tea is preferable.

When brewing green tea, it is important that the water is not too hot, otherwise there is a risk of burning the tea leaves and making it taste bitter. Boil the water and let it cool to between 75-80 degrees before adding the tea. Dosage for loose tea is about one teaspoon of tea leaves per cup. How long to steep depends on how strong you want the tea to be, but about 2-3 minutes should be enough.
